Captain Marvel
12 Mar 2019 07:25 amWe finally get to see the back story of Nick Fury's eyepatch! And it's good.
Captain Marvel is another BDF (Big Dumb Fun) from Marvel movie universe, and a character I knew nothing about going in. After I figured out since it's set in the 90s, that Vers (Captain Marvel) was also of the 90s, which explains her 90s riotgrrl snarkiness, I liked her a little more. Her costume is amazing, as per usual with Marvel. I liked her mohawk helmet and the special effects related to her costume like the face mask and all of the light that surrounds her.
The other highlights for me: I loved, loved, LOVED Stan Lee on the bus, intently studying his Mallrats script. That was genius! And Nick Fury and the cat. I would watch him play with a cat for two hours. Where's that movie?
There were a few things I didn't like. No, that's not the right word. A few things that were a little disturbing? Ok: There were a couple things that gave me a frisson of angst:
I thought there was going to be the Black Best Friend trope, and after seeing Black Panther, I thought Marvel could do better. However, this scenario is not the true definition of that trope. Maria is Carol's (again, Captain Marvel) best friend, and she definitely has her own life, and is a wicked amazing pilot. Those flight scenes were amazing! She can fly. Still, something about it seemed... off. I wanted to see a little more of Maria's story. Maybe that would have made the "off" feeling go away? I don't have good enough story telling/analyzing skills yet to articulate this.
The AI (I'm assuming) that de-aged Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg was seamless. That type of special effect has been vastly improved since Guardians 2. That's just in two years. And I couldn't stop thinking during the movie about how that type of technology has already been used in the real world to change people in images and videos and make them look like they are saying and doing things they never did. <Insert panic attack>.
